The song “Secrets” is a perfect song for The Lying Gamesoundtrack. This song relates to the theme of lying that is going on throughout the entire book. Emma Paxton received a fake message to come to Tucson, Arizona to meet her long lost twin sister Sutton, but when Emma gets there she realizes Sutton is nowhere to be found. Emma later receives a note saying, “Sutton’s dead. Tell no one. Keep playing along…Or you’re next” (Shepard 99). Emma lies to Sutton’s family and friends about her real identity and pretends to be Sutton to protect herself from becoming the murderer’s next victim.
The lyrics“better lock it in your pocket, taking this one to the grave” can be seen from Suttons’s killer’s point of view of how this secret is never to get out and shall be kept all the way until Emma dies. The importance to the killer of Emma keeping his secret can be supported during when he breaks into the house Emma is staying at and almost strangles her after she attempted to run away earlier that day and he says,” Keep being her until I tell you different. And don’t try and skip town again or your next” (Shepard). The lyrics “two can keep a secret if one of them is dead” represents how the secret of Sutton being murdered will not get out since Sutton can’t tell anyone because she is dead and Emma can keep the secret since she is being threatened. The lyrics “everybody tells, everybody tells” relates to the fact that no secret can really be kept forever just like how Ethan suspected Emma wasn’t really Sutton and Emma broke her cover to him revealing the secret she was supposed to keep forever. In the song when Allison tells Katherine “to swear on her life not to tell the secret” it is similar to how Emma’s life depends on her keeping the secret of her twin being murdered. This song is a representation of the importance to the killer of Emma holding his secret and how he will go to drastic lengths even kill Emma if his secret gets out.
