Babies being switched at birth and going home to the wrong parents is a very painful and unfortunate event. It is unknown what the best thing to do is since both sets of parents have grown to love a child whom they believed was their own and are unwilling to give that child up. However the parents are curious to get to know their biological child whom they have missed out on caring for and loving. It is a difficult and confusing situation and there is no easy way to deal with it. The pain this traumatic accident causes is enormous.
In The Lying Game Sutton and Emma were switched at birth therefore lacking the opportunity to get to know each other. If the girls had not been separated at birth they could have gotten to know each other and share a childhood with their not only their twin, but someone who could be their best friend. Maybe if the twins were together Sutton would not have been killed either. Also due to the twins separation Emma was placed in the unstable life of being a foster child, while Sutton was adopted into a stable and fortunate home. The pain of losing out on having a loving family can be expressed by Emma’s thoughts while eating dinner with Sutton’s family, “In a way, this was the first family dinner she’d had in, well, ever. Even with Becky most meals were either in the car after hitting a drive through or on trays in front of the TV. Or else Emma ate a bowl of cereal alone while Becky delivered an hour-long soliloquy to an empty apartment courtyard. Jealousy ripped through her once more, but she quickly set it aside. Sutton’s dead. Emma would never have a family dinner with her sister” (Shepard 124). Time cannot be recovered and therefore sometimes it is too late in Emma’s case to meet her long-lost sister. At least in the story from the video the parents figured the truth out while the children were young and have time to embrace their lost child. No matter what separations at birth are not right and cause many complications and lost opportunities. This issue that exists today shall hopefully not be repeated.
